ECOBOARD Audit Results Firewire’s Thailand manufacturing site was audited by Sustainable Surf. The company has effective processes to ensure Qualified Materials are used in boards using both ECOBOARD Gold Level and Level One labels.

Comprehensive records of the audit results are held by Sustainable Surf.

Audit date 07/21/2016
Brand Sustainability Firewire is approved to build both Level One and Gold Level ECOBOARDS.

The company builds performance surfboards and accessories through innovative design, materials and construction methods. They have a strong emphasis on limiting their impact on the environment and also giving back to the global surf community through the support of various environmental and humanitarian organizations including Surfrider Foundation, Parley, Surfers Against Sewerage, Surfaid and Share the Stoke.

Firewire’s TIMBERTEK models have always used ECOBOARD Project Qualified Materials; combining sustainably grown Paulownia wood deck skins and bio-resin throughout.

In 2014 Firewire converted their entire production to Entropy Super Sap bio-resin, and thereby qualified every Firewire board for the Ecoboard Project.

In addition, the Paulownia wood used in the Timbertek boards is sourced from a certified, sustainable resource, and also includes a 20% recycled content EPS core, and 30% bio content Entropy epoxy resin.

Energy Firewire is focused on energy efficiency. The Thailand site is currently exploring options for renewable energy with a longterm plan to install solar panels.
Waste Waste control measures are in place throughout the factory. Resin is very carefully mixed and monitored. Waste EPS is captured and sent for recycling into a range of products. Firewire is also exploring options to recycle waste EPS into high value building materials.
Packaging Firewire uses BAST recycled content/recyclable packaging for most board ranges. Alternatives are being explored for other packaging used.
Health and safety Worker health and safety (WHS) is at a high standard. The site proactively promotes and enforces WHS. Examples include providing appropriate personal protective equipment, emergency response stations, and mandating helmet use for motorcycle and scooter riders entering the site.

Surfboard Sustainability
Approved to build Level One ECOBOARDS using Qualifying Resins and blanks.

Brand Sustainability  In a pioneering first for a global SUP and windsurf board company, all 2017 Starboard models will be eligible to carry the ECOBOARD Project label, as a result of shifting 100% of their global production to now use approved plant-based, low/zero VOCs, epoxy resin systems. Along with a host of other shifts towards more sustainable materials and processes, Starboard’s actions will result in a smaller carbon footprint across their 2017 board range, and ultimately a healthier ocean for everyone.

Starboard’s commitment to reducing impacts from all major components of their 2017 model boards goes beyond just the boards themselves – as all their composite SUP fins , and all composite paddle blades, will also be infused with an approved bio epoxy resin. Additionally, all their plastic fins will gradually shift during 2017 to 100% bio-based plastics, enabling the use of stronger and more durable materials with a lower carbon footprint. Production on 2017 models started in June, and boards will be shipping in July.

Additionally Starboard will be shifting all packaging to more sustainable materials (including removing the  traditional  dust protector bag ). Starboard will also be shifting away from styrofoam-based protective packaging and instead using reinforced cardboard for added strength and more shock absorption protection than currently sourced packaging materials.

“We are just really getting started on our brand’s sustainability pathway related to all of our products,  say’s Svein Rasmusen, founder and CEO of Starboard. “But we’ve been stoked to work with Sustainable Surf to reduce the carbon footprint of all our composite boards by switching to bio-based epoxy resins, reducing overall paint use / VOCs, and sourcing better packaging materials. We also have lots of other R&D in process for better performing materials related to traction pads, fins, inserts, paddles  that use recycled materials and plant-based plastics. And I can’t wait to see our “Concept Starboard” at our international dealers meeting in San Diego on the 25th of September ( http://www.world-dealer-meeting.com<http://www.world-dealer-meeting.com/>) , which will showcase the use of as many of these new materials and processes as possible.

The big idea is to drive ourselves, and the whole industry forward, by creating a realistic model for what could be achievable over the next 3 years to produce a eco-revolution in high performance manufacturing.Reinforcing their commitment to thinking globally but also acting locally, Starboard is partnering with several organizations on their home turf in South East Asia to support sustainability initiatives focused on cleaning up plastic pollution from beaches and waterways (Trash Hero http://trashhero.org/ ),  fighting climate change (Worldview international foundation  http://www.thorheyerdahlclimatepark.org/ ) and recycling styrofoam ( Polyfoam http://www.polyfoam.co.th/home.html )  among others.

Surfboard Sustainability
Efforts
Earth Technologies operates under 3 Core “E” Principles.
1. Excellency in Craftsmanship. We take great pride in our American Hand-Crafted, California made boards. Our boards are the anti-thesis to disposable Asian “pop-outs” as they are made by the highest skilled craftsmen in the business and made with the best performing materials resulting in “Rad Boards, Made Right..”

2. Eco-Sustainability.  We are all Ocean-Lovers. As such, over the years we’ve painstakingly tried and perfected performance board building utilizing only the most eco-friendly materials (EPS recycled blanks, bio epoxy resin, wood veneers) and processes (recycling foam blank cut offs, bio epoxy resins, etc.) featuring our renown Earth Technologies board construction.

3. Education. In addition to being surfers, we are also story-tellers. We have made a deliberate attempt through our many communication channels (social media, website, printed board catalogs, etc.) to share with others our unique eco board construction and demonstrate why there need not be a tradeoff between performance and eco-sustainability.
Energy Has measured their energy consumption for the past year. Currently looking for ways to reduce energy consumption.
Waste When using Super Sap resin, waste resin is frequently applied to hand-planes. When using Re-Rez, waste resin is saved and will be returned to Re-Rez.  Clean fiberglass off-cuts are saved and sent to Push Fins. EPS scraps are saved and recycled with Marko Foam.
Packaging  N/A – Boards are generally hand-delivered.
Health and safety Polyester resin is not used by the factory. All employees are strongly encouraged to wear protective clothing to keep epoxy away from skin.

Brand Description Jon Pyzel has been part of the surfing community for as long as he can remember, growing up surfing from a young age in the historic surfing town of Santa Barbara, CA.  After traveling around  the world looking for good waves, Jon realized that he needed to live somewhere with better waves in warmer water, making a permanent move to the North Shore of Oahu in 1992.

Getting his start fixing dings in the legendary Country Surfboards  factory, Jon quickly learned the ins and outs of the craft,  working  as a hot coater, laminator,  ghost shaper and finally shaping under his own label. It was a great environment to learn from some of the best shapers and glassers in the industry.

The combination of being surrounded by many of the world’s most talented surfers and shapers, and the high quality of the surf have given Pyzel a great opportunity to build world-class surfboards, becoming one of the most sought after  shapers for all kinds of surfers and waves.

Designing and shaping each board from scratch, Pyzel knows every curve, bend, and turn on the  boards he builds. The result is master craftsmanship and attention to detail that only decades of experience and a good eye can provide.

Today Jon lives on the beach in Hawaii with his wife and 2 daughters,  runs the Pyzel Surfboards factory on the North Shore and travels to shape in Australia, Europe, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia and California  (and surfs pretty much every day).

Brand Description Since 1979 William “Stretch” Riedel has been creating distinctive and innovative custom hand built boards for surfing, sailing, kiting, and tow surfing. Born in Malibu, CA, he was taught to build boards by his father Mike Riedel, a shaper for Velzy Jacobs Surfboards in the 1960’s. His multitude of craftsmanship and wave riding skills eventually landed him in Santa Cruz where a life changing windsurfing accident in 1988 left him with partial paralysis. His enthusiasm for progressive wave riding continues daily with technological advancement, team feedback and a passion for building the best board possible.

Santa Cruz, California
Located blocks from the beach in mid-town Santa Cruz, the factory is prime location for scheming-up unique and alternative construction techniques. Stretch builds each individual board under the same roof in the largest dedicated EPS/EPOXY surfboard factory in Northern California. Combine that with a team of unbelievably talented riders, progressive designs and premium California coastline and you get some of the best wave riding imaginable.

Getting Results
“I begin shaping everyday before sunrise. With headphones on and tool in hand, there’s only one way I get the job done. I personally tend to every board so that my customers receive the same quality and scrutiny as any of my team riders. I never cut corners. All my boards receive 100% attention. That’s how we get results.”

Brand Description Custom surfboards made and designed by Ashley Lloyd Thompson, and glassed in house by husband, Alex Thompson.

Ashley Lloyd Thompson is one of the few women in the world who shapes surfboards.

In 2002, while balancing the study of music at Santa Barbara City College, running her own surf instruction business, and pursuing professional surfing, Ashley also began the craft of making surfboards. Lloyd Thompson is ever grateful for Danny Tarampi, of the Malibu area, and the Boys from the Wilderness, in Santa Barbara, who guided her through her first steps in foam, fiberglass and resin. In her beginning, Ashley shaped and glassed all of the boards she made, start to finish. In 2005, Lloyd was recognized by brilliant Bing head shaper, Matt Calvani, and signed on as a Bing team rider as well as Bing shaper with her own signature model. Shortly after her move to Santa Cruz, Ashley designed another Bing model, Dear & Yonder, named after the film in which it was featured.

TODAY, with the desire to make surfboards with less of an environmental footprint as well as less toxicity to the makers, Ashley and husband/music partner, Alex Thompson decided to switch over from using conventional polyester resin.  Alex is now glassing their boards in-house, naming the glassing side of their factory “Greennest Glassing“, glassing boards with a plant-based epoxy resin made by Entropy Resins.

PU foam is used, as well as the option of post-consumer EPS.  With great appreciation for traditional longboard surfing, it has been paramount for the Thompsons to achieve a classic feel and glide while treading lighter on the environment.

Ashley strives to create joy, balancing her life’s work with shaping, surf instruction, and playing music with Alex in their band, The Shapes. Signing boards, “made with love”, Ashley Lloyd Thompson puts heart into all that she creates.

Energy In addition to installing LED lighting and being committed to using a little energy as possible, Ashley Lloyd Surfboards is exploring several energy saving and green energy options with other companies within the complex where they operate.
Waste By having recycled EPS blanks shaped at Marko Foam, shaping waste is able to be recycled – minimizing the amount of waste produced on site. Waste resin is used to make customized signage for each customer. Recycled building materials have been used to fit-out the factory and Ashley Lloyd’s display at the Santa Cruz Boardroom Show.
Packaging Surfboards are packed in reused cartons.
Health and safety Ashley and Alex are both aware of aware of the health and safety considerations relevant to the products they use. By using only epoxy resin on site they have effectively mitigated any VOCs.
