ECOBOARD Audit Results Firewire’s Thailand manufacturing site was audited by Sustainable Surf. The company has effective processes to ensure Qualified Materials are used in boards using both ECOBOARD Gold Level and Level One labels.

Comprehensive records of the audit results are held by Sustainable Surf.

Audit date 07/21/2016
Brand Sustainability Firewire is approved to build both Level One and Gold Level ECOBOARDS.

The company builds performance surfboards and accessories through innovative design, materials and construction methods. They have a strong emphasis on limiting their impact on the environment and also giving back to the global surf community through the support of various environmental and humanitarian organizations including Surfrider Foundation, Parley, Surfers Against Sewerage, Surfaid and Share the Stoke.

Firewire’s TIMBERTEK models have always used ECOBOARD Project Qualified Materials; combining sustainably grown Paulownia wood deck skins and bio-resin throughout.

In 2014 Firewire converted their entire production to Entropy Super Sap bio-resin, and thereby qualified every Firewire board for the Ecoboard Project.

In addition, the Paulownia wood used in the Timbertek boards is sourced from a certified, sustainable resource, and also includes a 20% recycled content EPS core, and 30% bio content Entropy epoxy resin.

Energy Firewire is focused on energy efficiency. The Thailand site is currently exploring options for renewable energy with a longterm plan to install solar panels.
Waste Waste control measures are in place throughout the factory. Resin is very carefully mixed and monitored. Waste EPS is captured and sent for recycling into a range of products. Firewire is also exploring options to recycle waste EPS into high value building materials.
Packaging Firewire uses BAST recycled content/recyclable packaging for most board ranges. Alternatives are being explored for other packaging used.
Health and safety Worker health and safety (WHS) is at a high standard. The site proactively promotes and enforces WHS. Examples include providing appropriate personal protective equipment, emergency response stations, and mandating helmet use for motorcycle and scooter riders entering the site.

Brand Sustainability  Airush’s first step in terms of environmental responsibility has always been to build only the highest quality products possible, so that they can last for years. This was first evident five years ago when Airush became the first company in the industry to offer a full two year breakage warranty on freeride twintips. And they are now offering the Airush Load Frame, which effectively doubles the performance lifespan of the kite.

Airush has also been working with companies such as Entropy and Sicomin to help to introduce plant-based, reduced carbon footprint resins to mass production processes, and have been sharing as much of their knowledge with the industry as possible.

This philosophy is championed in their Team Series Reefer, which showcases Airush’s desire to connect more strongly with the environment, along with the value of pushing riding boundaries.

With strong ties to sustainability-leader Starboard, Airush is also seeking to reduce carbon footprints, leave a positive impact on communities where they operate and work with the kitesurfing community to share best practice.

ECOBOARD Audit Results Airush’s Thailand-based manufacturing partner was audited by Sustainable Surf.

The audit identified that Airush has comprehensive systems in place to ensure that boards ‘carrying’ the ECOBOARD label meet the ECOBOARD Project requirements. Their partner has sector-leading processes and procedures that ensure boards are made to the ECOBOARD specification, appropriate protections are in place for staff regarding occupational health and safety risks, and broader environmental impacts are considered and managed.

Brand Website http://flamasurf.com/
Brand Description Flama‘s first goal is to build the most eco-friendly surfboards possible, avoiding as much as they can the use of chemicals and petroleum based materials. Their hollow blank technology allows them to build 99% organic surfboards.

Flama fully embraces the Cradle-to-cradle design, a biomimetic approach to the design of products. To get the full info about their philosophy: http://flamasurf.com/content/6-philosophy
MAIN GOAL: Closing the “organic circle” by building 100% organic and fully sustainable surfboards.
—-
FLAMA-CLASSIC TECHNOLOGY
A hollow box construction made entirely on paulownia wood, that allows to build 99% organic surfboards. They can be commercialized as a finished surfboard, or as a blank to be shaped the same way and with the same tools as if it was a foam board. The main difference is that the board does not need to be fiberglassed, it’s only varnished.
Materials used: 98% paulownia wood, 1% bamboo, 1% poliurethane glue and standard wood floor varnish.

FLAMA-EVOLVE TECHNOLOGY
An open-project that wants to produce high performance unglassed surfboards by using a vacuum bag sandwich construction. Fiberglass has been replaced by paulownia wood that is wrapped around a soft core. At the present moment we’re in search of a greener organic foam to be able to substitute the current recycled EPS we’re using.
Materials used: paulownia skins, bamboo veneer, recycled EPS core, wood floor varnish.

Audit Results  Flama Surfboards has been audited by Sustainable Surf to confirm the use of Gold Level qualified materials and processes. The company has a strong commitment to sustainability and promoting the expansion of wooden surfboard building throughout Europe.

Approved to build Level One ECOBOARDS and Gold Level ECOBOARDS
Website http://www.notox.fr/
Brand Description    Providing surfers with boards that truly match their values, while making them the most accessible possible, is the aim Notox has been pursuing since 2009. Inventor of eco-built surfboards (based on vacuum bagged flax, cork, recycled polystyrene, bio-epoxy), Notox has kept challenging their processes to produce ever-more responsible and sustainable boards.

In early 2009, they first built a safe, healthy and eco-friendly workshop meeting the highest standards on :
• Air quality
• Noise reduction
• Toxicity
• Security and work comfort
• Sorting of waste

To us, performance is a goal considered equally important as environmental ethics.
• Better vibrations absorption
• Great dynamics
• Lighter weight
• Easier handling

Notox boards produce waste for less than the half their weight, 75% of which is recyclable.

Materials are sourced in France and Portugal, less than 700km away from the Notox factory, resulting in a substantially decrease carbon footprint. These materials come from an organic natural origin or from recycling and provide no toxicity for people and nature.

We seek to leverage costs as much as possible to remain within an affordable scope of price for the majority of surfers, while ensuring the best quality of materials.
And to make our boards even more accessible, we recently developed an entry level board fully covered with raw cork: no more dings, no more wax, fully reparable and definitely stress-free.

Sustainability

ECOBOARD Audit Results A LCA audit showed that for building a flax board of 3kg, Notox generates 4kg of waste ( all included: sanding dust, fabrics, EPS, Cork, etc.). Then, 75% of these wastes are sorted and sent to recycling (through a network of partners). That means less than 1kg of wastes is needed for building a flax board.

Notox’s last range of cork boards has even less waste, with only 500g (mainly cork dust impregnated with resin) generated for building a 3.5kg board

For their sustainability efforts, NOTOX was awarded EuroSIMA ECORIDE GOLD in 2012 (https://www.eurosima.com/nos-actions/ecoride/).

Audit date  02/15/2018
Surfboard Sustainability
Efforts
Notox uses recycled EPS foam (either from MARKO ENVIROFOAM or local manufacturer), which is then CNC machined and hand finished.
Depending on the specific board technology, Notox laminates the blanks with raw flax fabrics (neither bleached nor treated) or combined with raw cork (produced from recycled cork waste).
The boards are glassed and assembled using bio-epoxy either from SICOMIN (GP56) or ENTROPY (CLR or SUPER SAP ONE). The boards are vacuum bagged in order to strongly press the fabrics or cork against the core (for better strength and performance).

Brand Sustainability  NSP’s aim is to constantly look for new ideas and technologies to reduce their impact on the ocean as they build new surf and SUP boards, and accessories.

NSP has been using coco-mat fibre in their boards for several years, resulting in reduced use of fibreglass and the shift to a readily renewable organic material. In 2017, Sustainable Surf partnered with Harmless Harvest coconut water and identified the opportunity to use coconut husk fibre waste as a fibre-glass replacement.

The Fair-For-Life Certified, responsibly-sourced fibre from Harmless Harvest is now being used in NSP’s Cocomat fibre boards as a result of this new partnership initiated by Sustainable Surf.

NSP uses plant-based epoxy resin from Sicomin and water-based dye pigments, resulting in a low-toxicity, zero-VOC manufacturing process.

NSP is also the first surf and SUP manufacturer to incorporate shape-molded SecureCell EPS foam into their board ranges. This significantly reduces foam waste.

ECOBOARD Audit Results

NSP’s Thailand-based manufacturing partner, COBRA International is audited annually by Sustainable Surf. COBRA also publishes an external Sustainability Report.

The audit identified that NSP has comprehensive systems in place to ensure that boards ‘carrying’ the ECOBOARD label meet the ECOBOARD Project requirements. Their partner has sector-leading processes and procedures that ensure boards are made to the ECOBOARD specification, appropriate protections are in place for staff regarding occupational health and safety risks, and broader environmental impacts are considered and managed.

Brand Description
In every life there are a lot of changes but also some constants. In my life, one of the constants was always a great love to all kind of boardsports.
Born in 1963  I started skateboarding in the early 70’s  and built my first skatedeck just 2 years later. In the late 70’s windsurfing was pulling me out of the sailboats into a world of resins and fibers and it didn’t take a long time till the first boards have been built. Early 80’s snowboarding hit the snow and my workshop, a few boards where built and custom ones sold to some friends. Late 90’s kitesurfing was the name of the game, great sport but crap equipment, so I had to build my own boards again.
Now after working for 15 years in the sportsmarket I’m sure if you want a perfect board that suits you in all important parameters, the only solution is a custom board. Every stockboard will always be a compromise for most of the people.

Brand Description
”A surfing foundation to start shaping”

Nuno Matta, a respected surfer and shaper, was one of the best Portuguese competitors of the 90’s, disputing National titles, plus notching many results in the top 16 of the EPSA European circuit.

He slowly started taking his own path, while still being a competitor, he started to shape his own boards. Born from his passion of riding waves. With much love, dedication and a deep understanding of the relationship between the surfer, the board and the wave he created his first designs. Before he realised it, his career as a shaper kicked off – while Nuno was a fierce competitor (and was the only European competitor that shaped his own boards).

Fast forward years later and Nuno’s work has been noticed and praised on a international stage, while working with some of the best surfers in the world. He had the privilege and the opportunity to work with some of the masters in the art of surfboard shaping: Ricardo Martins, Jason Koons, Joca Secco, Xanadu, John Pyzel, Bill Johnson and Tim Patterson. This amazing and privileged exchange has provided Nuno to evolve into the shaper he is today.

Today, Nuno Matta is a shaper.. and remains a passionate surfer. His label MATTAshapes is growing into one of the most visible surfboard manufacturers in Europe and in the world. His factory is small enough to care, big enough to make a difference.

Surfing is his love, his life and this will never change.
