Firewire’s TIMBERTEK models have always used ECOBOARD Project Qualified Materials; combining sustainably grown Paulownia wood deck skins and bio-resin throughout.

In 2014 Firewire converted their entire production to Entropy Super Sap bio-resin, and thereby qualified every Firewire board for the Ecoboard Project.

In addition, the Paulownia wood used in the Timbertek boards is sourced from a certified, sustainable resource, and also includes a 20% recycled content EPS core, and 30% bio content Entropy epoxy resin.

Energy Firewire is focused on energy efficiency. The Thailand site is currently exploring options for renewable energy with a longterm plan to install solar panels.
Waste Waste control measures are in place throughout the factory. Resin is very carefully mixed and monitored. Waste EPS is captured and sent for recycling into a range of products. Firewire is also exploring options to recycle waste EPS into high value building materials.
Packaging Firewire uses BAST recycled content/recyclable packaging for most board ranges. Alternatives are being explored for other packaging used.
Health and safety Worker health and safety (WHS) is at a high standard. The site proactively promotes and enforces WHS. Examples include providing appropriate personal protective equipment, emergency response stations, and mandating helmet use for motorcycle and scooter riders entering the site.

Surfboard Sustainability
Efforts
Earth Technologies operates under 3 Core “E” Principles.
1. Excellency in Craftsmanship. We take great pride in our American Hand-Crafted, California made boards. Our boards are the anti-thesis to disposable Asian “pop-outs” as they are made by the highest skilled craftsmen in the business and made with the best performing materials resulting in “Rad Boards, Made Right..”

2. Eco-Sustainability.  We are all Ocean-Lovers. As such, over the years we’ve painstakingly tried and perfected performance board building utilizing only the most eco-friendly materials (EPS recycled blanks, bio epoxy resin, wood veneers) and processes (recycling foam blank cut offs, bio epoxy resins, etc.) featuring our renown Earth Technologies board construction.

3. Education. In addition to being surfers, we are also story-tellers. We have made a deliberate attempt through our many communication channels (social media, website, printed board catalogs, etc.) to share with others our unique eco board construction and demonstrate why there need not be a tradeoff between performance and eco-sustainability.
Energy Has measured their energy consumption for the past year. Currently looking for ways to reduce energy consumption.
Waste When using Super Sap resin, waste resin is frequently applied to hand-planes. When using Re-Rez, waste resin is saved and will be returned to Re-Rez.  Clean fiberglass off-cuts are saved and sent to Push Fins. EPS scraps are saved and recycled with Marko Foam.
Packaging  N/A – Boards are generally hand-delivered.
Health and safety Polyester resin is not used by the factory. All employees are strongly encouraged to wear protective clothing to keep epoxy away from skin.

Brand Description Custom surfboards made and designed by Ashley Lloyd Thompson, and glassed in house by husband, Alex Thompson.

Ashley Lloyd Thompson is one of the few women in the world who shapes surfboards.

In 2002, while balancing the study of music at Santa Barbara City College, running her own surf instruction business, and pursuing professional surfing, Ashley also began the craft of making surfboards. Lloyd Thompson is ever grateful for Danny Tarampi, of the Malibu area, and the Boys from the Wilderness, in Santa Barbara, who guided her through her first steps in foam, fiberglass and resin. In her beginning, Ashley shaped and glassed all of the boards she made, start to finish. In 2005, Lloyd was recognized by brilliant Bing head shaper, Matt Calvani, and signed on as a Bing team rider as well as Bing shaper with her own signature model. Shortly after her move to Santa Cruz, Ashley designed another Bing model, Dear & Yonder, named after the film in which it was featured.

TODAY, with the desire to make surfboards with less of an environmental footprint as well as less toxicity to the makers, Ashley and husband/music partner, Alex Thompson decided to switch over from using conventional polyester resin.  Alex is now glassing their boards in-house, naming the glassing side of their factory “Greennest Glassing“, glassing boards with a plant-based epoxy resin made by Entropy Resins.

PU foam is used, as well as the option of post-consumer EPS.  With great appreciation for traditional longboard surfing, it has been paramount for the Thompsons to achieve a classic feel and glide while treading lighter on the environment.

Ashley strives to create joy, balancing her life’s work with shaping, surf instruction, and playing music with Alex in their band, The Shapes. Signing boards, “made with love”, Ashley Lloyd Thompson puts heart into all that she creates.

Energy In addition to installing LED lighting and being committed to using a little energy as possible, Ashley Lloyd Surfboards is exploring several energy saving and green energy options with other companies within the complex where they operate.
Waste By having recycled EPS blanks shaped at Marko Foam, shaping waste is able to be recycled – minimizing the amount of waste produced on site. Waste resin is used to make customized signage for each customer. Recycled building materials have been used to fit-out the factory and Ashley Lloyd’s display at the Santa Cruz Boardroom Show.
Packaging Surfboards are packed in reused cartons.
Health and safety Ashley and Alex are both aware of aware of the health and safety considerations relevant to the products they use. By using only epoxy resin on site they have effectively mitigated any VOCs.

Ecoboard Audit Results Ventana’s Santa Cruz-based manufacturing site was audited by Sustainable Surf. The company has effective processes to ensure approved materials are used in Gold Level qualifying boards.
Audit date 08/25/2016
Surfboard Sustainability Ventana’s surfboards are produced from reclaimed, recycled and repurposed materials and finished with Entropy ONE bio-based resin.

Wood is generally locally sourced, up-cycled from waste produced by local organizations – giving each board a unique sustainability story. For example, boards may contain Santa Cruz Guitar Company Indian rosewood, redwood floorboards from a Santa Cruz mansion, Alaskan yellow cedar from Monterey Bay Aquarium benches and walnut offcuts from a cabinet shop in Santa Cruz.

The rails on Ventana’s boards are made of sustainably-sourced oak cork. This not only provides a beautiful aesthetic to each board, it also results in a more robust, impact-resistant structure.

Fins are also handcrafted from reclaimed wood and glassed in Entropy bio-resin.

Energy Ventana applies the same ‘no-waste’ principles that are part of their board manufacturing process to energy management on site.

All machinery and lighting is turned off when not in use, and the layout of the production space takes advantage of natural light.

Being a leased property, Ventana has committed to discussing options for green energy purchasing with the current landlords. With two other Ecoboard builders within the complex – this is a great approach.

Waste Waste is almost completely designed out of the Ventana board building process:
  • Offcuts from the surfboards and handplanes, broken saw blades, old drill bits, used resin brushes and the like are saved for use by a featured, local artist, Chris Allen: http://ventana.surf/artist
  • Ventana share offcuts and other reclaimed materials for use in the collab boards built with Locus Surfboards:http://ventana.surf/locus
  • They have used sawdust to make soy wax fire starters and have added it to beach trash bottle candles:http://ventana.surf/candles.
  • They use offcuts from the surfboards in handplanes: http://ventana.surf/handplanes
  • Some reclaimed wood that isn’t used in their surfboards and handplanes is used for apparel hangtags (leash cord key chains) coupled with leftovers from the production of Khordz Mugs made by a partner company: http://ventana.surf/khordz.
  • Offcuts are also used to create other things, like the 2016 Save The Waves awards this year.
Packaging N/A – Boards are generally hand delivered.
Health and safety In addition to eliminating foam, the exclusive use of bio-epoxy results in a low-VOC process. Appropriate personal protective equipment is used on site.

Approved to build Level One ECOBOARDS and Gold Level ECOBOARDS
Brand Website http://surfboardsfrommars.com
Brand Description Surfboards from Mars are 100% handcrafted by Mark Sarinana in Carlsbad, California. Surfboard models are generally made with wider, shorter templates where volume, surface area, and aspect ratio are taken into account. The overall goal is to create performance shortboards, fishes, and hybrids that can be surfed in a variety of wave moods. The boards generally have higher amounts of concaves, creating lift and allowing water to flow for added speed, and tapered rail lines which allow quick rail sinking into hollow waves. The idea is to have a board that can survive gutless surf; where width and area come into play; and can handle tubes- where thin rails and foam distribution are key. Our surfboard models are visually unconventional custom shapes, merged with classic styles to produce unique, quality designs.

Surfboards From Mars are shaped with lighter, recyclable, high quality, and high density EPS foam, and are glassed with environmentally conscious Bio Epoxy (Super Sap BRT) resin. These resins are the best on the market and have been proven to have a stronger, lighter, and more flexible lifespan than traditional surfboard resin, and are also a much cleaner choice for the environment.

The company focusses on sustainable surfboard designs using Entropy Resins and Marko EnviroFoam blanks.

Energy Surfboards From Mars has installed LED lighting through the workspace, with plans to explore solar power viability to reduce energy impacts further. The organization is also switching to a more energy efficient, hybrid-vehicle.
Waste All scrap EPS is taking to a recycling plant where foam is repurposed into packing material or picture frames.

Surfboards From Mars reuses gloves, cups and brushes – minimizing the material footprint of each board and ultimately, waste.

Knowing that material waste makes up a big portion of a surfboard’s carbon footprint, the company carefully measures and minimizes the amount of resin used for each board and uses excess resin for ding repairs. Surfboards From Mars also has plans to use excess resin to make fins that incorporate other recycled materials.

Packaging Most customers are local, so no packaging is required.
Health and safety Surfboards From Mars made the shift from polyester some time ago and has no plans to use materials other than those Qualified by the ECOBOARD Project. A full suite of personal protective is used when making boards.
